A Case for Support
Blue Mountain Academy
“They shall be all taught of God”
The dream of having a Seventh-day Adventist boarding school became a reality when the East Pennsylvania Conference Constituency voted on May 11, 1952, to launch a boarding academy project.
They formed a committee to search for a location for the school and decided on a 667-acre parcel of land nestled at the foot of the scenic Blue Mountain range.
With the faith and vision of our early pioneers, the dream became a reality. Many came out to witness and participate in the ground-breaking ceremony on April 14, 1954. During the next eighteen months construction crews worked hard, and it was with great delight that Blue Mountain Academy opened its doors to students in September, 1955. A dream had come true!
Today BMA celebrates 50 years of educating young people, and weare proud to have graduated more than 3,000 students!
Currently courses of instruction include honors and advanced-placement classes, religion, aviation, music, gymnastics, leadership training, languages and much more. There is something for everyone, and each experience is varied. While we offer classes to challenge the academic achiever, we also offer help for those who struggle. We are excited about having a Learning Specialist as part of our staff. Her program teaches solid study habits, and offers testing and tutoring. We mark every student for success.
To continue to expand our program, we are planning to hire additional staff. This will also allow us to add more advanced-placement and honors courses, as well as continue to advance technology in the classroom. Our commitment to academic excellence is as strong as ever.
Student aid is another area we are looking to strengthen. We recognize that many families face financial challenges when looking at the cost of sending their child to Blue Mountain Academy. To address this, we are looking at ways to expand our student aid program as we continue to offer a guaranteed work program.
Over the years we have tried to keep our buildings in good repair. However, we face many challenges in maintaining a 50-year-old campus. Immediate needs include replacing windows and plumbing throughout both dormitories. Currently plumbing lines are poured into cement, making small repairs a major job. Unsightly metal or plastic coverings hide repairs when the job is complete.
In overall plant maintenance, we have other less obvious challenges; specifically the Department of Environmental Protection mandate for us to update our sewer plant. Currently we are licensed to treat 50,000 gallons of wastewater daily, but our plant is only able to properly treat 20,000. Therefore we are being required to add extra tanks and equipment. This upgrade must be completed by May, 2006.
Our campus water system is another concern, as we look at access to and certification of our water tanks. While we are currently within code, we have been strongly advised by the Department of Environmental Protection to replace our tanks, as a mandate to do so is in our future.
After 50 years of service, BMA has many urgent needs. In recognition of this, the BMA board has approved a Capital Campaign designed to address these and many other pressing issues. Though ambitious, we view it with the same level of faith and vision that empowered the academy’s early pioneers more than 50 years ago. We move forward prayerfully with this campaign in order to perpetuate their dream and to make it our own.
